What a fantastic first two weeks we have had in Year One! The children have settled in incredibly quickly to their new classes and we are very proud of how happy and focused they are.
To begin with we did lots of work on one of Mrs Clist’s favourite books ‘The Colour Monster’. This book helped us all begin discussing our emotions and how we can manage them, particularly if we are finding things difficult. We also talked about our school rules and how important it is to try and follow them at all times so that our classroom is a happy and safe place.
We then moved on to beginning our Maths work on numbers to 10, even though this sounds like very small numbers for some of the children it is a chance for the teachers to see what we really know. The children might be able to count to 10 in order but do they know that 4 + 6 = 10 and so does 3 + 4 + 3.
We have also been showing off our writing skills by writing simple sentences about our families and about Paddington Bear and his disastrous trip to the seaside. The children are trying very hard with their handwriting, Mrs Clist wants every letter to be formed correctly and sitting on the line rather than in the air. This is proving rather difficult on the new small year One lines.
We have also been busy learning lots of new words for subjects that the children didn’t know existed when they were in Early Years, words like Science, Geography, RE and even PSHE. There is so much to take in and remember and the children are doing so well with all the changes from last year.
Please remember it is our Meet the teacher evening on Wednesday at 5:45, we would love to see as many of you as possible there so that we can talk through your child’s learning this year and hopefully answer any queries you have.
