COVID-19 Confirmed Cases Statement

“In recent days we were informed of positive cases of coronavirus within the school community at Brookside Academy – affecting both year 2 and year 6 groups. We have now been informed of a further case in our year 6 group.

“We have continued to work closely with colleagues at Somerset County Council’s Public Health Team, have undertaken a risk assessment and have identified the children who may have been in close contact with the confirmed cases.

“Following national guidance we have asked all close contacts of the cases in year 2 to self-isolate at home until Friday 25 September, which will be 14 days since their last contact with the confirmed cases. This advice remains unchanged.

“However we must now ask our pupils in year 6 to stay at home and self-isolate until the 3 October and return to school on Monday 5th October, as this is their last contact with the latest confirmed case.

“Public Health have carried out a risk assessment and are satisfied with all the measures we’re taking to keep students safe. These include the robust and enhanced cleaning procedures we have implemented throughout the day.

I must stress that children self-isolating at home do not need to get a test unless they develop symptoms. If any other students become symptomatic and are awaiting tests or results, they must self-isolate and must not come to school. Cleary this has had an impact on the school community and those pupils involved and their families. However, both affected year groups - Year 2 and Year 6 will have comprehensive online resources building on the curriculum they would be following at school, while they are self-isolating.”
